Although citrus fruits are in bloom in the spring months, the citrus fruit is preserved during the winter and can be used in drinks just as lemons or limes are used or even to make wonderful marmalade. They were imported from China to the U.S. around 1900. They are used in the United States primarily for decorative purposes and often as a bonsai specimen, and trees are grown throughout South Asia and in Malaysia, India and the Philippines for their juices. Citrus is a hybrid between a species of the genus Citrus (in this case probably mandarin) and kumquat. They can live as houseplants, however they are best kept as outdoor plants in semi-shaded locations or in direct sunlight.
